Hoot by Carl Hiaasen

 Hoot by Carl Hiaasen was  a very interesting book.  When Roy moves to Florida, the first thing he sees is a boy without shoes running away from the bus.  He sets himself up to find the boy and in doing so, he gets caught up with the boy who is trying to stop the bulldozing of burrowing owls to make a pancake house.
